Axilliary Hyperhidrosis... cont'd
Isam
Osman has just completed one of the first scientific trials in the UK assessing Botulinum
toxin . This is a nerve toxin produced by bacteria; it is used routinely in
tiny doses by neurologists to help overcome muscle spasms (and as a
“non-surgical facelift” to reduce wrinkles by relaxing the underlying facial
muscles). It
also stops sweating from the skin in the area where it is injected by affecting
the nerves which supply the sweat glands.
The effects last for six months or longer.
Recurrence of symptoms can be treated by further injections.
In
the Ipswich trial, patients expressed a very high degree of satisfaction with
the armpit injected with Botulinum and noticed a marked reduction in sweating.
There were no significant complications and all the patients in the trial
returned to have the other armpit injected.
Isam
Osman’s good results with Botox have convinced us that this is this preferred
treatment for isolated axillary hyperhidrosis.
